More Than Just Pulling

Many people take the grip it and rip it approach to rowing.  The clock’s going, the music’s blasting, and the metcon’s on.  They pull as hard and as fast as they can.  The work gets done, sometimes very quickly even, but just like with other seemingly straight forward movements, such as running, improved technique will make you more efficient, and allow you to go even faster.  A 2k row recently came up on the mainsite, and this video (WMV/MOV) accompanied it.  Watching someone row 2,000 meters is by no means the most exciting thing you’ll ever see, and this isn’t the definitive piece on rowing, but there are some good tips in there.  We’ll review technique Wednesday, then send you off on a journey to PR city.

  1. Thank you for the video for this WOD today, it help and reminded the 5:30-ers to focus on our technique

    Hopscotch: 2 left feet
    Strength: 50kg PR
    WOD: 8:07

  2. Fun and productive workout today!
    Press: 57kg (PR)
WOD: 7:37 (PR) up from 8:36 on 8/5/10

My real motivation for the WOD was to beat my ex-girlfriend’s 2k row time of 7:45. She was a coxswain for the UMass men’s crew team, and used to row with them. Done and done!

Nice work 6:30 class. I enjoy working out with you all.

  3. Press 32kg PR
    WOD: 10:04 Slllllooooooooowwwwwww.
Next time you see me at the box, remind me to pull down a rower and do 500…

  4. 2k @ 8:40. The first time you try anything it’s a PR, so I’m already WINNING for the morning. Not as unpleasant as I’d feared, it’s amazing what a difference less-bad form can make…

  5. Press: 61kg PR by 1kg. Only took 7 months to get that 1 extra kg. haha.
Row: 7:34.7 – Also a PR, but unhappy with the time. Had the Erg set to 4, and I think I would’ve done better at 6 or 7.
