Next time your extra tan, spiky haired friend/cousin/coworker asks you “how much you bench?” you’ll have a response, because Thursday we’re doing it. The bench press is a great exercise for developing pure upper body strength, especially when used with the strict shoulder press, which we do regularly. You can move more weight in the bench press than in the shoulder press. Once proper technique is learned all you have to worry about is pushing. In the shoulder press your entire body is working to stabilize the load as it is pressed over head. While bench pressing your body is supported, allowing for a maximal effort, and absolute expression of strength. Even though we’re mixing in this classic gym lift, have no fear, we’re not planning on bicep curls or calf raises any time soon.
