Cal – Print Marketing Specialist for an e-commerce company, called Vistaprint, which sells printed marketing materials. Specifically, I send physical mail pieces to our customer base (like 80/Treat Cupcake Bar) with our sales and promotions and do a lot of analysis to determine who to send them to and with what offers. I’m also a part-time MBA student at Bentley, hopefully finishing up at some point in 2014! Outside of work, I’m a professional eater of delicious things James cooks.

James – Full Service Account Manager for a market research firm, called Global Market Insite (and personal chef for Cal). Basically, companies come to us with a business problem and we provide the insight to help them solve this problem. Not glamorous, but I love what I do.

CrossFitting Since:
The end of August 2010 (At Fenway). Cal’s very first WOD was in DC though, with her sister. After months of trying to get Cal to go with her, Cal finally succumbed to the peer pressure and did Tabata Gone Bad (Fight Gone Bad in Tabata intervals). It was horrible, and she wanted to un-sister her sister immediately. She could barely walk, but in true CrossFitter fashion, couldn’t wait to get home and find a local box! It didn’t take us too long to decide that this was for us, so together we set out on the adventure and dropped in to Fenway one evening. The strength was snatching, which certainly gave us an interesting impression since neither of us knew what the heck we were doing. But we were hooked anyway!

Favorite CrossFit WOD:
Cal – Annie, unless James beats me, then probably Mary. The sit ups in Annie are so sucky, but I love double unders. And pistols and HSPU (hence, Mary), though I could really do without those 15 pull ups.

James – Christine or anything that requires body weight movements. If there was a WOD that had a 20 rope climb buy in with 100 box jumps to follow I would be so psyched. Beating Cal in Annie also temporarily makes that one my favorite.

Favorite CrossFit WOD Song:
Cal – Rack City. This was also the name of our Fenway Throwdown team in 2012, where we had the (self-proclaimed) best dressed team complete with business cards (courtesy of Vistaprint.com)

James – Black and Yellow (old box throwback!). Every time I hear this song I picture my bar rolling away from me due to the slanted floors at the old box.


Cheat Meal of Choice:
Cal – Easily spaghetti and meatballs with marinara sauce and cheese…lots of fresh grated parm. And dessert. And pizza. How do you choose one?

James – Homemade Mac and Cheese or Chicken Pot Pie. Who doesn’t love some comfort food? For a quick one, I love a giant slice of NYC Pizza.

Greatest CrossFit Achievement So Far:
Cal – Body weight C&J (and beating James at stuff). There’s something really cool about being able to move your body weight around on a bar.

James – Muscle Up (much to Cal’s extreme envy). Another one would be competing solo in an Rx competition at Southie.

One interesting thing about yourself not related to CrossFit:
We both know all the words to the Canadian national anthem (in English) better than we know the words to the American national anthem. We’re season ticket holders to the Bruins (though James is a Rangers fan!) and look forward to all the games against Canadian teams to show (sing) off our stuff. We have also both seen the Stanley Cup up close when the Bruins won in 2011. James touched it, though this means that he’s cursed to never win it. Cal is too superstitious (she wears the same outfit to every game).

Complete the sentence: “CrossFit should…”
Cal – …be fun. If it’s not fun, why bother doing it? I might complain (a lot), but don’t listen to me. I love this stuff.

James – …encourage more “that’s what she said” jokes (i.e., not be taken too seriously). CrossFit should make you enjoy coming back everyday, regardless of the amount of thrusters you have to do (I’m looking at you Eric).

Why do you CrossFit:
Cal – because running got really boring and monotonous and I wouldn’t be able to do this type of training on my own. There’s something about the team/group atmosphere that keeps me going. And because I want cannons for arms.

James – because it gives me the ability to see ordinary people do extraordinary things on a daily basis. Fenway definitely has the best community around which makes it easy to want to come back everyday. Also, an early morning workout can wake you up better than a double shot of espresso.


Favorite CrossFit Moment:
Cal – James getting a muscle up. And measuring my progress — looking back at my journal from my first year and realizing how far I’ve come!

James – Hitting the 135# snatch in 13.1. And working out with Cal every morning.
