A Functional Movement with No Function

Overhead squatting is not something you’d do every day (unless of course you’re Claire Savage, who has a new found appreciation for the written word since deciding her goal for July is to overhead squat during television commercials), and I don’t just mean that in a programming/working out sense.  You could reasonably expect to press, push press, squat, front squat, deadlift, clean, or even jerk at some point during any given day.  I cannot think of a time in life when an object would be locked out overhead and squatted for any reason other then physical fitness.

The overhead squat is not a functional movement.  It’s not not functional, it’s just doesn’t have real world application.  Overhead squats can place incredible demand on strength, stamina, balance, coordination, accuracy, and flexibility, all things we’re working on improving daily.  Not a believer?  Try a set of 15+ at 50% of your 1 rep max.  Hell, try a set of 20 with an empty bar.  While it may have no use outside the gym, overhead squatting makes us better at everything else we do, such as all the other aforementioned movements.  The overhead squat is not functional in and of itself, but it makes us more functional.

    1. Thx, Jules–it was great to be in the box with some of my favorites from the 6:30 crew. I look forward to be back (for real) in August.

I went light today, not sure what my body would do after being away for essentially 5 months:
      OHS: 29kg
      WOD: 13:50 @ 3/4 pood, 1 green
      11/8/10: 14:13 @ 1 pood, 1p & 2red

  1. OHS: 35kg pr

WOD: 16:43 with 24kg KB, made it through the round of 4 with dead hang then switched to 1 red for a few rounds, then switched to two red for the round of 8 to finish it out.
